Show us a better American Syrah at this price, and we’ll…do something crazy! It’s that good! Velvety smooth, rich and round, with boat loads of dark berry flavors and great structure from start-to-finish.
We taste some savory, earthy and graphite notes in the middle that balance out the ride. The grapes were sourced from a single vineyard in the Columbia Valley, Washington. Just 48 cases made!
Chris and Hilary Berg live on an incredibly beautiful 20-acre plot of land (planted with seven acres of mostly Pinot Noir grapes) high on a hill in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA (American Viticultural Area) of the North Willamette Valley, Oregon.
The vines were planted in 1999, but their first harvest destined for a serious wine wasn’t until the 2002 vintage, and since then, Chris has crafted great wines, not only Pinot Noir from their estate vineyard, but also using grapes from neighboring vineyards and beyond.
Not one to keep things simple, Chris makes a couple handfuls of wines each year under a few different labels (Roots, Racine, which means “root” in French, Klee, Theo, Art Brut, The Barrel Project, Sheboygandy, and Un Autre Monde), and using no less than seven different grape varietals!!
If you visit the tasting room (also on the property), you may agree that Roots is one of Oregon’s best-kept secrets. The Bergs, the coolest of couples, seem to like flying under the radar, though, so don’t tell anybody!
